How to make some easy DIY Cages for outdoor Halloween decor. These were perfect for a mini skeleton critters and we hung them from trees!
For this year’s Halloween trail, we wanted to replicate the idea that we’ve seen on Pinterest SO MANY TIMES that I’m not even sure who to credit with the original idea: skeletons in laundry basket cages! These are easy (and cheap) to make which is my favorite part. We made two of them.
DIY Laundry Basket Skeleton Cages for Halloween Decor
Supplies
- (2) Laundry bins from Dollar Tree
- Rustoleum 2x Spray Paint, Black
- Black zip ties
- Small skeletons or skeleton heads
- Battery operated Lights
- Twine
- Optional: Chains
Step-By-Step Tutorial
Our au pair Max ended up working on these for me because I’ve been SO busy between the kids, work, and volunteering with the school (why do I always take on too much in the Fall months?!). These laundry baskets are the cheap ones from Dollar Tree… nothing fancy.
Step 1: Spray paint the laundry bins black using Rustoleum spray paint that is MADE FOR PLASTIC.
Step 2: Drill a hole in the bottom of the top bin. This is to run your rope through to hold the cages in a tree.
Step 3: Add your lights and critters to your bins.
Step 4: Run a rope through the hole in the top bin, tie a knot in it, then ziptie the bottom laundry bin to the top.
Step 5: Hang it up in a tree. I made sure the lights were close to the edge so I could flip the switch on at night. I also added some chains I had laying around to the top. They’re on there loose.
