The Great Outdoors (Our Yard), Part VIII: Filling the Raised Beds

Sharing is caring!

Now that I had these great raised garden beds, I wanted a way to fill them as cheaply as possible. Part of this is just because we wanted to save some money and the rest was that our car couldn’t fit many bags of soil so we were trying to save some trips back and forth from the store. I found this link about how to fill raised beds with other stuff besides just regular garden soil (which is what we got for the rest, the type made for vegetable gardens).

Laid out cardboard, then newspaper over it, and wet the newspaper down.

Decided to use the grass clippings (newer) and the older compost
materials for the very bottom layer of the raised beds.
Then we (and our big helper) worked to fill the beds with soil that we got from a store.

We shopped around to find the best (current) price which I believe was $6/bag.
