Nursery Painting Tips
The wall color used was “Tame Teal” (SW6757) from the Harmony collection at Sherwin Williams.
A low-VOC paint was chosen after learning that VOC levels can affect indoor air quality long after painting is complete — an important consideration for homes with asthma or allergy concerns. Low- or no-VOC paints produce fewer fumes and are generally a safer option for nurseries and bedrooms.
Even with low-VOC paint, proper ventilation is recommended. Windows were kept open and a fan was used during painting.
Cost Breakdown
- Paint: $52.99 per gallon (discounts reduced total to $37.69 for the second gallon)
- Painter’s tape: $8.95
- Small brush: $2.15
- Large brush: $3.23
- Roller covers (6-pack): $9.95
Total cost: $99.06 (with supplies remaining for another small project)
Before painting, trim was taped carefully, outlet covers were removed, and extra lighting was used to ensure even coverage. Trim and edges were painted first, followed by rolling the main wall areas.

Creating a Cohesive Nursery Palette
Tame Teal pairs beautifully with crisp whites, warm neutrals, and natural wood tones. Accent pieces in soft grays, blush, or muted gold can create depth and visual interest without overwhelming the space. Coordinating textiles like rugs, pillows, and curtains help tie the color throughout the room for a cohesive, serene atmosphere.

Lighting and Ambiance
Lighting was a huge issue for this baby’s nursery because there is only one window for natural light. This is good when it comes to sleep training, but the room was too dark the rest of the time.
A decorative column was purchased on sale and paired with a lamp from IKEA to create a unique lighting feature. It was positioned behind the rocking chair to reduce the risk of it being tipped over.
A ceiling-hung lamp was also installed as an alternative lighting solution. At the time, installing a ceiling fan was not feasible, so this provided an affordable and practical option.

Functional Decor That Matches
Functional nursery pieces can double as decor accents. Consider entry coat racks, shelves, or storage bins that highlight the color scheme. Even small touches like crib bedding or storage baskets in complementary tones can accentuate the beauty of Tame Teal.
For this entryway, a custom coat rack was created using coordinating fabric that matched the bedding.
A piece of wood was measured to fit between the two existing shelf brackets and cut down to size.
The board was then wrapped in coordinating nursery fabric (the same fabric used for the baby blankets), pulling it tight before securing it in place with a staple gun. The ends were folded neatly like wrapping a present and stapled securely.
Next, the total distance between the two ends of the board (approximately 23″) was measured and divided by five to determine even spacing for the knobs. Holes were drilled at each marked location, and cabinet door handles were attached to function as hangers. This piece of wood was attached between the supports on this white shelf.

Wall Art and Decorative Accents
We painted pegboard dark gray to match.

I used fabric to create the wall art for the room… the fabric is embroidered with my sons’ names.

Window Treatments and Textiles
Soft, functional textiles like blackout curtains, crib sheets, and throw blankets can enhance both comfort and style. Tame Teal works well with neutral or patterned curtains that maintain the calm feel while offering practical benefits like light control and noise reduction.
