Every year, we host our Halloween Trail and the witch section gets tweaked, adjusted and improved. While a lot of our items are store bought, we also have done a lot of low key, cost effective DIYs to make the area even better!
The Three Trees
We have a trio of trees that our kids started to DIY a fort under. The horizontal branches attached made it a very cool witchy zone.
We used fishing line to hang witch decorations and lighted hats above the kids’ heads.

Spotlights like these help ensure that people can see witch decorations that may not have working lights anymore, or that would otherwise be hard to see in the dark.

We add treat sections along the trail for trick or treating. We took a cauldron, added water beads, and added the ‘treats’ (non food candy). The water beads, particularly in chilly October, make it feel icky and slimy when you reach in for treats.

An alternative is to add a small pond pump, water, with Green Gobbler Green water tracing dye: like our Puking Skeleton to create bubbling cauldron. A bubble maker is a good addition behind it as well.
When setting up the trail, we remembered the Blair Witch Project (for those old folks like me) and made some totems replicated the ones in the movie. Easy and cheap!

This large floating witch was a giant pain to put up, but she was a lovely addition to our trail. We added purple lighting to light her up on the dark trail.

Burning Witch
I saw this idea in a Facebook group and it was a quick project to diy. I got ZERO good pictures… but I took a picture from the video… it’s… not great.

However, I did a snag a good photo of the pyre we built last year vs. this year. We had some trees fall down in the woods and the guys piled it up for me. This should make a much more impressive setup this year.
But the idea is to create a pyre, add a red light and strobe under it, and then tie up a skeleton to it. They clearly knew how to do this better than I did… haha. I used a t post because I needed something to attach the skeleton to.
I did use one of the corpsed skeletons for this as they look more burned.

Hansel & Gretel Themed Area
Unfortunately, I didn’t get great photos of this area last year so I snagged some screenshots from the video.
We added this area under our platform and had candy canes entering the zone, a small table with tea lights, and we tried to keep a witchy vibe.

An easy add-on was a friend dressed up like a witch offering the kids candy.
This area didn’t get the work I had hoped last year, but the plan originally had been to add “candy” to the outside of the area to make it look like the witch’s house, but we used our typical black tarp and kept the content inside.
We’d also hoped to add a larger stove area.
We used old bones for decoration and it made a good touch.
One section had a ‘jail’ like spot where we had a smaller skeleton to be ‘Hansel.’ We really wanted to stuff some kids clothing and such to made a ‘real boy’ but eh. Time got away from us.

Well those are the ideas for now! If we add anything cool for future trails, I’ll be sure to update this.
