Blackout curtains are essential for creating a calm and restful nursery environment. DIY blackout curtains allow you to customize the design while controlling light and maintaining a cozy, stylish room. Using the right fabrics and simple sewing techniques, you can create functional window treatments that match any nursery decor.
The resources below provide helpful references for technique, but the final curtains can be customized to fit any nursery design and window size.
Cost of Sewing Blackout Curtains
- Accent Fabric: $8.98/yard and I used 20.5″ length each so total was $10.22
- Solid Fabric: $17.58
- I bought 3.677 yards of Kona Kona Coal Grey from Cotton/Quilting area and it was $7.99 or a total of $29.30. I used a 40% off coupon on the fabric which brought it down to $17.58 for these curtains.
- Blackout Fabric: $9.78
Total Cost: $37.58
Measurements for the Curtain
- Accent Fabric (Michael Miller): 20.5″ L x 27″ W
- Solid Fabric: 64.5″ L x 27″ W
- Blackout Fabric: 84″ x 54″ (width) cut into two panels of 84″ L x 27″ W
Note: When cutting fabric for DIY blackout curtains, it is important to account for seam allowances to achieve the desired finished length. Curtains often benefit from being slightly shorter than the full window height to prevent dragging on the floor.
For panel width, a common guideline is to use 2 to 2.5 times the width of the window in total fabric width. Smaller panels can still work depending on the window size and curtain rod, and may make hanging easier if space is limited. Adjusting panel width allows for proper drape and functionality while accommodating the specific window dimensions.
How to Sew Blackout Curtains
1.Iron the decorative and solid fabrics as needed. Blackout lining typically should not be ironed.
2. Cut all fabrics to the required measurements, including extra length for seam allowances.
3. Sew the accent and solid fabrics together, right sides facing. Ensure the fabrics are oriented correctly before stitching. After straight stitching, finish the edges with a zigzag stitch to help prevent fraying.
4. Press the sewn fabrics as needed, then topstitch along the seam where the accent and solid fabrics were joined.
5. Place the matching pieces of blackout lining with the decorative fabrics, right sides together. Pin and sew, leaving an opening to turn the fabric and topstitch the edges for a clean finish.

6.Turn the curtain right side out, press as needed, and topstitch along the edges to close the opening and secure the seams.

7. Lay out the two curtain panels side by side and ensure they are the same length before hanging. Double-checking alignment helps create a polished, uniform look.

8. Instead of using clips, create a rod casing at the top of each curtain panel. Use a strong stitch, such as a triple stitch, to reinforce the fabric and support the weight of the curtains. Ensure the casings are evenly spaced to keep the panels aligned and prevent lopsided hanging.

9. After sewing the top and bottom of the rod casing, create an opening along the casing using a seam ripper so the curtain rod can be inserted easily.

The finished blackout curtains provide effective light control while complementing the nursery decor. Properly aligned panels and coordinated fabrics create a polished, functional look.
