Day of the Dead Candles: DIY Project for the Ofrenda

Sharing is caring!

Easy Day of the Dead candles that I made for the ofrenda last year. These are soy candles made with a glass from the Dollar Tree.

Our au pair last year was from Mexico so she setup a lovely ofrenda for Day of the Dead, and it’s a tradition I’d like to continue every year. It’s a comforting way to feel connected to lost loved ones, and I am fascinated by how so many cultures see the Halloween time / Samhain to be a time when the veil between the spirit world/Heaven is thinnest.

I found some glasses at the Dollar Tree that were REALLY nice last year so I whipped up these easy candles. If you’re looking for a full tutorial on candle making, check out this DIY Candle Making Tutorial. This particular tutorial is a lot more basic, although I did upcycle an old soy candle that didn’t work out as well.

To upcycle the old candle, I simple cut up the soy wax into smaller pieces and microwaved them, stirring frequently. Then I repoured into the Day of the Dead glasses. This works for SOY CANDLES and my wicks were made for soy candles as well. There was no mixing, matching or experimenting here.
