DIY Baby Leg Warmers: Sew and No Sew

Sharing is caring!

How to make baby leg warmers in three different ways: sew or no sew with hem tape. Leg warmers are cute as gifts or to coordinate with your cloth diapers.

Sometimes babies don’t need full pants — but they do need a little extra coverage.

DIY baby leg warmers (sometimes called “babylegs”) are the perfect solution. They keep little legs warm without overheating baby’s core, and they’re ideal for quick diaper changes.

And let’s be honest… they also look ridiculously cute.

Why Baby Leg Warmers Are So Useful

There are plenty of days when full outfits just aren’t necessary. A short sleeve romper or cloth diaper is perfect — until you walk into air conditioning or a drafty store.

Baby leg warmers:

  • Add warmth without layering bulky pants
  • Make diaper changes easier (no waistband to remove)
  • Work great with cloth diapers
  • Help protect crawling knees
  • Let baby stay mostly “free” without getting cold

They’re especially helpful for babies who run warm or are sensitive to overheating.

A Real-Life Reason to Make Them

Picture this: it’s warm outside, baby is dressed comfortably, and you head into a store that blasts the air conditioning. Suddenly well-meaning strangers are concerned that baby’s legs look cold.

Instead of juggling blankets, jackets, or awkward social moments, footless baby leggings solve the problem instantly. Slip them on, keep baby comfy, move on with your errands.

No extra layers.
No wrestling with pants.
No unnecessary overheating.

Why DIY Baby Leg Warmers Are Better Than Pants

Traditional baby pants can be:

  • Too warm
  • Annoying during diaper changes
  • Constantly pulled on and off

With DIY baby leg warmers, you can:

  • Change diapers without removing clothing
  • Let baby wear just a diaper + leg warmers
  • Adjust coverage depending on temperature

They’re especially great for babies who dislike frequent outfit changes.

Project Supplies:

Tip: This is a great way to reuse knee high socks that have holes in the soles.

How to Make Leg Warmers for Your Baby

Start with your knee high socks. Cut off the foot part. If your knee high is very long, you may want to cut it down to the right size for your child’s legs.

Leave a little extra space for the hem (the area that will get turned over and sewn/hem taped to avoid raw fraying edges).

Note that I kept the hemmed top of the sock.

You have several options for hemming the bottom of the leg warmers.

Option 1, Sewing: You can fold over your raw edge of your legging and sew around it to give it a nice finished look. This is simple and can be hand sewn, or done with a machine.

Option 2, Fold Over Elastic (FOE): I decided to try using FOE around the edges to finish the area that I cut. To do this, you fold the FOE over the raw edge and use a zig zag stitch to sew it on.

Fold over elastic used on the bottom of these baby leg warmers to cover the raw edge. These were upcycled long socks.

The benefit to FOE is that I could make it stretchy at the bottom. It was probably the most time intensive of the options.

Option 3, No Sew: If you have iron-on hem tape, you can fold over your edge, apply this, and iron it on. Then you wouldn’t need to do any sewing. This works great if you don’t have a sewing machine. I am NOT a fan of hand sewing.

These were them after I finished!
