HOW TO MAKE A DIY CORNER DESK

If you are looking for a large corner desk for your office or homeschooling, this is it!

SUPPLIES

– Butcherblock – (3) 2x4s – IKEA Alex Drawers  – Varathane Premium Wood Stain – Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane – Kilz3 Premium Interior/Exterior Primer – Behr Ultra Scuff Defense Paint and Primer in One – (1 pk) 1.5″ Corner Braces – (2) Flat brackets 20-Gauge Galvanized Tie Plate – Large Command Strips

Step 1: Dig

Start by digging up the soil where you want to your slab. You can measure and mark the area with Inverted Marking Spray if you prefer.

STEP 1. CUT BUTCHERBLOCK TO SIZE

Cut the butcherblock down to the sizes you need. We went with 58″ and 83″.

Use a hole saw to cut a 2″ hole in the back of the desk to run wiring through. Afterwards, sand down the raw edges to smooth them out.

STEP 2. CUT A HOLE FOR WIRES

Step 1: Dig

Start by digging up the soil where you want to your slab. You can measure and mark the area with Inverted Marking Spray if you prefer.

STEP 3. BUILD THE LEGS

For each leg, you need (3) 2x4s for the vertical supports, (4) supports horizontally, and one diagonal support. These can be assembled with pocket holes on the inside of the L shape.

Once you’ve built your two legs, use Primer on the wood. Once dry, apply a couple of coats of your paint. I went with a gray color. Position the legs in place.

STEP 4. PRIME AND PAINT THE LEGS

There’s a good and bad side to butcherblock. You want the flawed side on the bottom. Apply your stain and poly to the bottom, then flip to do the top.

STEP 5. STAIN OR PAINT BUTCHERBLOCK

I wanted a removable option for the desktop, so I decided to use two sets of large command strips per drawer. They stick together like Velcro so they can be pulled off.

STEP 6. ATTACH BUTCHERBLOCK TO DRAWERS

STEP 7. ATTACH 2 PIECES OF BUTCHERBLOCK

Attach the two sections of desk top, with flat braces. Leave enough space between the IKEA drawers and the connection so you have room to screw them together.

STEP 8. TIGHTEN THE SCREWS

You want to make sure the tie plates are screwed tightly so the desk top is secure.

STEP 9. ATTACH LEGS

Each leg is attached to the bottom of the butcherblock with corner braces. That's all there is to it! A beautiful farmhouse style desk!
