HOLY COW. I hate trying to provide tech support for my mother via telephone… she lives in Texas, I live in Maryland. It is extremely painful and I’m not nearly as competent on the computer as everyone seems to think I am. There’s something about my inability to take out my frustrations by throwing the computer across the room that just makes it even more annoying… Not that I’d ever throw anything out of anger, but I like to know that I have the OPTION.
I mailed my mom an old webcam I got for free and a microphone. I was hoping it’d be as easy as plugging it in, but nope. I didn’t know what type of webcam it was (it’s not written on it! Ugg!) which made it harder and I didn’t get a cd with the drivers. I spent about an hour skyping with my mom (I couldn’t see her) to try to talk her through different install options, then did remote access via Team Viewer to try to do it myself to no avail. I gave up to get Baby G to bed.
Once he was down for his nap, I did some quick searching on the Internet and determined that it is a Quickcam VC which isn’t compatible with Windows XP (which is what mom has). Then I searched for solutions that others came up with and found this. Website with drivers. Downloaded and installed for my mom using the remote access. Nothing. I finally gave up because I found this at a ridiculously low price:
