Recently we canceled cable and our home phone line. Keeping just internet service, we are getting a higher speed than we were originally contracted for. As we had a 2 year contract and canceled early, early termination fee was $70 ($10 per month remaining in your contract). Note that the fee ends up being less than we are saving in a month.
We also had a home phone line which was occasionally useful, but realistically our cell phones are the primary way we receive phone calls. We’ve had two phone numbers we’ve tried for our house phone and while the second one was better, we still get a lot of spam calls. We kept our phone line unplugged most of the time because we were tired of it ringing and waking the kids. F-you automated callers.
- No taxes on internet.
- No equipment rentals for cable boxes (we were paying $32/month for equipment- with a cable box that has DVR)
- Cable boxes use a lot of power too so we may also save on electricity.
- We have Amazon Prime ($99/year) that allows us to watch tv episodes and movies free streaming through our Roku or PS3… sign up for a free trial of Prime using the link at the bottom of this post. We may also sign up for Hulu Plus ($7.99/month or $95.88/year). That’s still in the air and will depend on if there’s better way we can find to watch all of our favorite tv shows.
